About Takeshin Karate

Takeshin (Bamboo Spirit) Karate takes it's inspiration from the bamboo - hard on the outside, strong and flexible on the inside, an apt description for an art that combines the hardness of Japanese Karate and the yielding of Aiki Jujutsu. Takeshin emphasizes self defense rather than competition karate. Central to this art is the study and application of Kata (pre-set sequences of self defense techniques handed down by the Masters).

Takeshin emphasizes understanding principles such as correct body-structure to strengthen defense and off-balancing to weaken your opponent, giving you a double advantage if attacked. From the beginner to advanced student, Takeshin emphasizes how and why techniques work so that as students progress, they can make techniques progressively more efficient until minimal motions, correctly timed and applied, will have apparently "magical" self-defense results.
